Would you look at that, it’s the end of the year. I can’t believe 2017’s actually over. It kinda feels dream-like, with time passing by so swiftly. I’m not sure why, maybe it’s just part of becoming older. People do say that time starts flying by later in life. Perhaps it’s just me. Maybe I’m going crazy? Nah, no possibility of that.
2017 was a strange year for me, personally. The first half of it wasn’t all that great. The usual problems, stress, anger, etc. The second half got way better, though! I still have my problems regarding stress, but it’s not as horrible now. Well, more like a little less horrible. I guess some personal problems are less manageable than others.
In terms of games, 2017 has been amazing. Yes, there were some bad games out there this year, but the amount of good games we got are countless! From Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, to NieR: Automata‘s surprise success, Persona 5‘s pure style, Mario Odyssey‘s return to open-world platforming, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The games coming in 2018 seem to suggest we’re entering another gaming renaissance! In which I’m only coming for Kirby. And a chance to play the original Bayonetta. Oh, and SMTV was confirmed a while ago. …What else…? Gah, too many good-looking games! Despite the now-and-always-turbulent political climate the world’s torn up within as of now, I’m glad that at least some enjoyment can be had with games.
Speaking of pointless opinions, time for a quick rolldown of how I feel about some controversial gaming topics!
- Mass Effect Andromawhatever: Personally, I never really cared for Mass Effect, as I don’t care for “make a choice or so-and-so dies”-type RPG games. But er… Special mention to this because I feel sorry for the guys who were looking forward to it and were ultimately let down. That and the facial animations are funny.
- Star Wars Battlefron ver. 2.0 with Lootboxes: Screw you, EA. You can’t just expect people to be dumb enough to simply hand money over. End discussion.
- “So-and-so is Dark Souls”: Just because a game is difficult doesn’t mean it is Dark Souls. Besides, Crash Bandicoot isn’t supposed to be easy. The original game was already hard, as per due for old 90’s-early 2000’s platformers. And Cuphead‘s difficulty stemmed from the creators wanting to not just homage the good ol’ days of western animation, but the days of challenging run-‘n-guns like Megaman X. Yes. I get it. Dark Souls is difficult. Okay? No need to compare things not even in its genre to it!
Well, more like just three. I needed to get those off my chest. Especially the one regarding game difficulty. Hm… It’s been a long time since I last discussed difficulty in games. I think I want to touch upon that topic again. There are a lot of topics I want to talk about more in 2018. They’re mostly my personal opinions regarding game design and storytelling.
Speaking of storytelling, I want to work on my creative writing more often. I need to stop lazing around like a bum! I need motivation! …I’m tired. Seriously, I do need to exersize my writing skills more. I’m a gal who likes storytelling, so I should actually do more of it.
So, all-in-all, 2017 was a fine year for me. Started off rough, but became better through time. I don’t have many resolutions, beyond stopping my lazy habits. Besides, resolutions are kinda silly. So, all I have to do is hope 2018 is a fine year. And hope it isn’t the year the world explodes on itself. I really hope that doesn’t happen.
